The UW Autism Center's APEX (Advanced Peer EXperiences) Summer Camp is an evidence-based, neurodiverse-affirming summer program designed specifically for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other neurodevelopmental disabilities. The program offers 115 hours of treatment in 4 weeks, roughly the equivalent of a year and a half of clinic or school-based social skills training. Activities include social skills lessons, art/science projects, recreational activities, and board games, with direct teaching, modeling, role-playing, and continuous behavioral data collection. Children earn points for appropriate behaviors with daily and weekly reward opportunities. The staff-to-camper ratio is approximately 2 to 1, with groups of 8-10 campers supported by 5-6 counselors. Children need proficient language skills (equivalent of 6 years of age) to fully participate.
