Get an introduction to the world of self-publishing and how you can make your own unique, handmade cards or books and share your art with others as long as you have access to a copier. Your first project will be learning how to draw black-and-white illustrations and images in pencil and ink to make your own coloring book zine. You'll also create a page to contribute to a class zine. Learn about zines from single sheets of paper that can end up being eight or 16 pages, how to fold and cut these little booklets into zines, mini zines, or micro mini zines. Making multiple copies of zines is acting as your own self-publisher! This class encourages you to explore your surroundings, discover, and see the world around you in an imaginative way. Through the use of photography, you'll document subjects in a manner that's original, opening a wider artistic view of the world. You'll learn how to look at light, color, patterns and composition in order to create compelling photographs that are unique to your vision. You'll select your favorite image to be printed and mounted onto mat board at the completion of the class and also walk away with a set of digital photographs that showcase a skillset in the art of photography. No need for prior photography knowledge or a professional camera. Even a cell phone camera will do! This is about creativity, discovery, and, most of all, having fun!

Learn to draw comic characters and anime-style characters by drawing with pencil and then applying color. Your creations will be colored using colored pencils, watercolor, and/or colored markers. Designed for ages 8-16. Bring water and a snack. Registration closes Monday, July 20.

What if a door, mirror, or locker at your school led to another world — and you were the one who created it? Explore how authors build unforgettable worlds like the dragon kingdoms of Wings of Fire, the hidden mythological world of Percy Jackson & the Olympians, and the secret magical society in Amari and the Night Brothers. You'll design your own world by creating maps, inventing rules, and imagining creatures, cultures, and hidden or parallel realities. You'll develop characters who live in your world and face challenges shaped by the setting you create. By the end of the week, you'll write a three-page original story set in a world entirely of your own making. Build a world, open a portal, and tell your story.

On the first day, learn about drawing in graphite and character design. You'll learn about the concept of "penciling"and its variations. You'll also learn how to make a sketchbook out of a single sheet of paper, which ends up being 16 sheets. This will be your character and/or comic sketchbook, where you can work out ideas and have it be something to show friends. Many comic artists sketch in sketchbooks all the time, and those sketchbooks often get published. On day two, you'll learn inking, adding black and white (or grayscale) shadows with ink pens and watercolor markers (inking is a fun part of creating comics). You'll learn about cross hatching versus using bolder, darker shadows, and about inking originals as well as copies of work. Everyone will get the chance to draw on a standard

Discover creativity this summer at our youth glass art camp, where you'll explore exciting techniques like torch work, stained glass, mosaics, and fused glass. Guided by experienced instructors, you'll learn hands-on skills while designing and creating your own unique glass artworks. It's the perfect place for young artists to spark imagination, make new friends, and bring ideas to life in glass.

To start the week, you'll weave plain weave and twill weave structures on pre-warped looms. Then you'll design your own cotton cloth, and control the process from start to finish: winding a warp, dressing your loom, and weaving your project. This comprehensive introductory class will give you the basic skills you need to weave complex patterns in the future!

You'll be using a nature theme to create images of plants, landscapes, and animals with watercolor, acrylic paint, and mixed media. It's fun and provides step-by-step instruction.

Build up from the basics! You'll start by wet felting and needle felting hand soaps, meaning you cover a bar of soap with wool fibers and use hot water, soap, and friction to shrink and interlock the wool, creating a decorative washcloth around the soap. Then you'll work with that technique to decorate dryer balls/ornaments. Finally, you'll have a go at creating cute and fuzzy 3D friends. At the end of the week, you'll take home at least three finished projects, along with the skills to make many more. You, too, can make beautiful and functional items by ferociously stabbing 100% wool roving (a soft, fluffy rope of wool fiber resembling a 1- to 2-inch-thick rope or cotton candy) with a barbed needle!

You'll bring together the essential elements of storytelling — characters, setting, conflict, organization, grammar, and writing style — to shape your ideas into a complete story. Explore what makes a memorable character, how conflict drives a story forward, and how structure creates a clear beginning, middle, and end. Experiment with details, sentence fluency, and "showing vs. telling" to make your writing more engaging and expressive. You'll learn how to organize your ideas so your imagination can be clearly shared with others. By the end of the week, you'll create a one-page flash fiction or graphic story that brings all the elements of storytelling together. Discover your skills, build your story, and share your voice.

Draw landscapes, fantasy, and realism. Start out by creating a pencil drawing that you will then use watercolor or acrylic paint, with teacher instruction, to create a finished painting. No experience necessary; all levels are welcome.

In this introduction to the ancient art of weaving, you'll start by making simple woven potholders while we discuss and design your main project — either a small bag or a scarf. You'll have access to a range of fibers and a rainbow of colors to design with. For the rest of the week, you'll focus on creating this personal project on BARN's rigid heddle looms. By the end of the week, you can expect to have completed at least one woven potholder and your unique main project. More importantly, you'll leave with the knowledge of how to warp and use these two hand looms to design and make many future projects!
