Parent communication shouldn't be a separate subscription
Bunk1 exists because legacy camp software left parents in the dark, so camps bolted on a photos-and-letters app, often at the parents' expense. SummerBoss closes that gap at the source. The daily feed, photos, and camper letters live in the same platform that runs your registration and your day.
Why does this app exist?
Bunk1 solved a real problem. Overnight camps needed a way to show parents their kid was okay: photos from the week, one-way letters (Bunk Notes), a portal grandma could use. For camps running on software that offered parents nothing, Bunk1 was the fix, and plenty of camps have used it happily for years.
But step back and look at what it is: a second system, a second login for parents, a second vendor bill, and, in the common model, per-use fees that land on your families for the privilege of hearing about their own kid. It exists to patch a hole your camp management software shouldn't have had in the first place.
SummerBoss doesn't have that hole. The parent feed (photos, updates, check-in confirmations) is a core feature of the same platform running your registration, rosters, and health center. Photos support face matching so parents see their camper. Camper letters are built in. One platform, one login, and no toll booth between a parent and their kid's summer.
What Bunk1 got right
The product has real merits:
- A long track record with traditional overnight camps
- Simple, familiar photo and letter workflows for camp offices

A front-row seat to their camper's day, included
The thing parents actually want isn't a portal. It's proof of a good day. In SummerBoss, staff post photos and updates from the same app they take attendance in, and parents see it all in one feed alongside check-in confirmations. No second app to install, no credits to buy, no PIN card mailed home. It's simply part of what your camp software does.
- Photos, updates, and check-ins in one parent feed
- Staff post from the app they already carry
- Extended family can follow along

Face matching finds their kid in five hundred photos
Upload the day's photos and SummerBoss's face matching surfaces each camper to their own parents. No scrolling through the whole camp's album hunting for one face, and no charging families for the search. Parents opt in, privacy controls are built in, and the photos live in the same gallery as the rest of the summer.
- Automatic face matching with parent opt-in
- Privacy controls camp and family both hold
- One gallery for the whole season

Camper mail, without the stamp machine
Camper letters are built into SummerBoss: parents write from the app, letters print for delivery at mail call, and replies can be scanned back to the family. It's the Bunk Notes job, done inside the platform your camp already runs on. One less vendor, one less login, one less bill.
- Parents write from the app; camp prints for mail call
- Replies scan back to the family
- Included with the platform

And it runs the rest of your camp too
Here's the structural difference. Bunk1 is an add-on to camp software; SummerBoss is the camp software. The same platform delivering your parent feed also runs a registration morning that doesn't crash, tracks attendance and medications, files incident reports, manages your staff, and lists your camp in a directory families browse when planning their summer. If you're paying for camp management somewhere and Bunk1 on top, you're paying twice for a worse version of one thing.
- Registration, operations, health, staff, and communications in one platform
- One vendor, one bill, one login for parents
- A directory listing bringing you next season's families

Switching? We'll move your data for you.
For camps joining this season, our team does the migration with you: we take your exports (rosters, families, programs, sessions, contacts), clean them up, and set up your SummerBoss account so your first login already looks like your camp. No CSV wrestling, no retyping five hundred families.
Moving off Bunk1 is mostly a rollout, not a data migration. Import your roster and your parent feed is live the same week.
- We map and import your rosters, families, and program history
- Your next season is pre-staged and ready to review, not rebuilt from scratch
- A real person double-checks everything before you go live
Included free for camps onboarding for the upcoming season.
Prefer to do it yourself? The import wizard walks you through exporting from your current system and brings your data in step by step.
Built for registration-day rushes
A waiting room keeps the site from crashing, programs open in waves, and payments retry and recover, so the busiest morning of your year stays fast.
Switch on your schedule
Import rosters from any system and run the day (QR check-in at the gate included), then move registration over when you’re ready, even mid-summer.
We handle payments
Families pay by card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay at checkout. SummerBoss collects and pays you out on a regular schedule, with every order tied to each transfer. No Stripe account to set up on your end.
Your data, secured
Encrypted in transit and at rest, with role-based access and a full audit trail.
